Bird of the Hand operates an organic plant nursery, organic apple orchard, self-serve farmstand and organic farm. The farm is a small farm (about seven acres) which supplies our local area with organically grown perennials, perennial herbs and flowering plants throughout the growing season, and apples and pumpkins during the fall. The farm is organically certified through Bay State Organic Certifiers and our products are USDA organically certified.
When in season, we have fresh organic apples available. Our main apple varieties are McIntosh, Cortland, and Red Delicious. We also have smaller quantities of other varieties. (Some are Heirloom) Roxbury Russett, Northern Spy, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Red Rome, Wealthy, and Criterion (available over the course of the season as they ripen). We also sell jelly & apple sauce.
Please note: Organically grown apples do not always meet the picture perfect image of an apple. Organic apples may have some superficial blemishes. On occasion a worm or two may share your apple with you. As a great wise woman has once said, "If a worm can live in this apple, then that shows me it's good enough for me". The apples are sprayed during the course of their growth with organically approved imputs. The apples may have a whitish blush on them, which is a residue of the Surround Spray, a clay product that is a pest deterent. This can easily be polished, or rinsed off with water. We do not polish our apples as that speeds up the ripening process and decreases their shelf life. All of our apples are sold market fresh, we do not store them for extended periods of time in refrigerators. For longer shelf life store them in a refrigerator or in a cool area, such as a root cellar or garage. Do not let them freeze.
